How to create your own website

Learn how to build a ministry or business website and save hundreds of dollars on design fees with these do-it-yourself instructions.

How to Create Your Own Website

You have a ministry or business.

You want a website.

You don’t want to pay the outrageous prices that you’ve been quoted by webdesign firms.

What do you do?

That’s easy!

You create your own website!

“But Sam, I don’t know the first thing about creating a website.”

Good thing you found this page.

Here is a step by step tutorial on how to create your own website.

It’s not free, but it will be a lot less than having a professional webdesign firm create it.

I was looking online for a local webdesign company, and they were charging $150.00 for a 1 page website, plus $10 a month for support and service. That comes out to about $270.00 a year - for just one page!

There are some firms that charge $100 a month for a simple website. Incredible!

Let me show you how to create your own ministry or business website.

Ready?

Let’s begin.

First of all you need to know the basics.

The Hosting Company

This is the company that has the computers connected to the Internet. They will save all your files on their computers.  There are several hosting companies to choose from. Their prices pretty much are the same, but you have to be aware of the features that come with the packages they offer. I’ve given you three hosting companies that I recommend both for price, reliability, and service.

The Domain Name

This is the dot com name that you want to have for your business. If your business is Mary’s Bakery, you might want to see if marysbakery.com is available. You might need to be a little creative when choosing a name. The best ones are probably already taken.

Site Builder

Unless you have webdesign software, you won’t be able to create a website on your own without the help of a Site Builder program. Each of the hosting companies that I have listed offer a free site builder. It may be a bit complicated in the beginning, but after some practice,  you’ll be able to build a website using their drag and drop software.

So, are you ready to start building your website?

Here are the steps you need to take:

    1. Choose your hosting company. The ones I recommend are JustHost.com, BlueHost, and HostGator. There are others, and you might want to look around, but I'm familiar with these companies, and I know they have free Site Builder Programs.

    2. Enter your domain name in their application to see if it is available. If it is available, you’ll get a congratulations message, and it will take you to the next step which will ask you to purchase a hosting package. If you are just creating a website to announce your business, then you don’t need anything more than they most basic package. If you are wanting to sell products online, you’re probably going to need a professional web designer.

    3. Once you finish the process of purchasing hosting, you’ll be sent an email with all the FTP information. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Don’t worry about this unless you plan on creating your website on your home computer, then uploading it to the hosting company. What you want to do is go straight to the Site Builder program.

    4. Now you’re ready to create your website. Play around with the Site Builder program – adding images, colors, text, etc. You won’t be an expert right away, but if you keep on trying, you’ll have a pretty professional-looking website before you know it. My suggestion is to create a temporary page that has all the information about your ministry or business, so that you can start promoting it. As time permits, you can begin to add more details and pages to your website.

You can probably have your own website up for about $100.00 a year. That’s about $8.33 a month.

I know it may appear complicated, and it probably is, but isn’t a little bit of frustration as you learn how to create a ministry or business website better than having to pay hundreds of dollars for it?

I hope this has been helpful.
